General Skilled Migration
Students who go on student visa to Australia, after two years of study they can apply for post study work on temporary graduate visa -subclass 485. This visa is useful for international students who graduated from Australia and want to extend their stay temporarily. The applicants who aim to permanent their stay can apply through General Skilled Migration; also must have the qualification and skills related to occupations that are listed on Skilled Occupation List (SOL). The listed occupation can be beneficial in obtaining PR points for immigration to Australia and is subjected to change frequently.
SkillSelect program is a point based system of Department of Home affairs; an online system that assist with skilled migration process. It can be used by skilled worker applicants; to settle as permanent resident in Australia using their work experience, qualifications, and language proficiency fulfilling Australian Immigration requirements. The SkillSelect service allows applicants to be considered for skilled visa by presenting an Expression of Interest (EOI). It requires providing personal details in terms of nominated occupation, education and work experience, language ability, detail of skill assessment associated with the nominated occupation and information about investment and business experience. After submitting EOI, the applicant needs invitation to apply for skilled migration visa that is valid for 60 days. The SkillSelect Service permits applicants for a number of skilled visas with different eligibility requirements.
What is Skilled Occupation List (SOL)?
-It combines all qualified skilled occupations in Australia along with the ANZSCO (Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations) code for each occupation that offers detailed skill level required to work in occupations.
-It also specifies if the occupations is included on Short-term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL), the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL), the Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (RSMS) or the Regional Occupation List (ROL).
-There is a different assessing authority for skills assessment of each occupation.
Types of Skilled Visa;
The following list of skilled visa differs in every applicant case. It is available if you meet the eligible skilled occupation list through training or work experience in Australia meanwhile satisfying the requirements.
- Skilled-Independent Visa (Permanent) – Subclass 189
The skilled independent visa invites workers and New Zealand citizen with skills, to work and live as permanent resident anywhere in Australia. It has two streams; Point tested stream and New Zealand Stream.
- Point tested Stream: This visa allows workers with skills to work and settle permanently anywhere in Australia. It doesn’t require any sponsor or nominator; just be invited to apply under the age of 45. The cost is from AUD 4,045 and the processing time for 75% and 90% of applications are 12 months.
- The New Zealand Stream: This visa allows the New Zealand citizen who contributes and commit to Australia; to settle permanently there. It takes into account the applicants that have lived in Australia for last 5 years at least. The cost if from AUD 4,045 and the processing time varies with the availability of volume of applications.
To be eligible for this, you must meet certain health and character requirements. In order to receive an invitation, there are point requirements that need to be completed and is based on factors like; age, qualification; course of study, work experience, marital status, English language test, certificate or diploma course and many other. To receive an invitation, applicant should have score of 65 points or more. It is important to gain and check score against point test to be qualified.
- Skilled-Nominated Visa (Permanent) – Subclass 190
The skilled nominated visa is for points-test skilled workers; the one who are nominated by Australian territory government agency or state to settle and work in Australia. It requires nomination of occupation that is mentioned on skilled occupation list. When invited to apply, the applicant age should be under 45 and have language proficiency.
-You can be outside or inside the Australia when applied or visa is granted.
-In order to apply for this visa, EOI needs to be submitted via SkillSelect.
-To get the invitation you must meet the visa requirement and at least 65 points score against point test factor.
-The cost is from AUD 4,045 and the processing time for 75% and 90% of applications are 10 months and 11 months respectively.
-Must meet health and character requirement.
- Skilled Work Regional Visa (Provisional)-Subclass 491
The skilled work regional visa is a provisional general skilled migration visa which requires the applicant to study, work and settle in regional area of Australia for at least 5 year period. Holder of the visa can include family members in the application and is eligible to apply for permanent visa once all certain residence requirement is met.
- Applicant needs to be aged between 18 and 44 inclusive.
- Applicants must have language proficiency and family members above 18 have at least functional English.
- Attain positive skill assessment for the occupation mentioned on Skill Occupation list.
- Meet the 65 points score against point test factor.
- To be invited to apply, submit an Expression of Interest (EOI).
- Should be sponsored from family member or nominated by State or Territory.
- Meet certain health and character requirement.
The applicant can apply for permanent visa as Permanent Residence Skilled Regional Visa- Subclass 191 after working and living in regional area for at least 3 years.

What happen if your occupation is removed from the SOL?
If the applicant has already submitted the application or the nomination is on pending, there won’t be any impact on the process if that specific occupation is removed from skilled occupation list. However choosing any occupation later, that isn’t on eligible skilled occupation list, can impact your application for migration skilled visa.
