Student Visa
Australia, the third most popular study destination is currently a home to almost 700,000 international students. Although the education institutions are lower and not enough to be compared with US’s Harvard or UK’s Oxford but the other are up with their best. The Australian National University, The University of Melbourne, University of Sydney, University of New South Wales, Monash University and University of Queensland ranked in the top 100 universities in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2020.
In order to pursue studies in Australia, you need to obtain an Australian student visa. You can apply for student visa by enrolling in:
- EnglishLanguage Intensive Course For Overseas Students (ELICOS) – General English, Cambridge, IELTS preparation etc.
- Primary and Secondary School
- Exchange program
- Vocational Education and Training (VET) Course – Marketing, Business, Sport, Tourism, Hospitalities and other
- University Course – Bachelor, Master and PhD degree
- Student sponsored by Department of Foreign Affairs or Trade or the Department of Defence
- Non-award course
Student Visa Requirements:
The student should be able to prove or satisfy Department of Home affairs that they meet followingstudent visa requirements:
Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) – The applicant must be able to demonstrate that he/she is a genuine student and intend temporarily stay in Australia. The Department of Home Affairs takes assessment on following factors:
- Applicant circumstances in home country in terms of financial, political, social and economic aspect
- Value of chosen course to study; to future and in home country.
- Previous travel to Australia
Currently Australian Universities assess the students for Genuine Temporary Entrant Requirement, and if they fail to satisfy any criteria, the university doesn’t grant admissions.
- English Proficiency Requirement: Applicant needs to provide evidence of English language test to get admission in university and onwards for visa. It could be IELTS, PTE, TOEFL or any other. Exemptions from language test may include; previous studies in English or holding passport from any specific country. If the student fail to meet desired score, the university offer English pathway program to continue the studies.
- Confirmation of Enrolment(COE): Applicant must be registered at any accredited institution which is listed on Commonwealth Register of Institution and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS) for any primary and higher education program. The student should have COE issued in hand before applying for visa process.
- Financial Requirement:Applicantneeds to provide evidence of financial funds to support their stay in Australia. It requires mentioning relation with funds sponsor, source of income and financial statement. The financial statement should cover around one year tuition fee, accommodation cost, travel and other expense. In any case, if any family member accompanies them to Australia, the additional cost should be shown.
- Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC): International students undertaking studies in Australia along with dependents if any must obtain OSHC. It includes visit to doctor, limited pharmaceutical and some hospital treatment.
Applicants need to provide sufficient proof of all the documents before they proceed for visa application.
Student Visa Subclass:
Student Visa has been simplified to subclass 500.
Students Visa Conditions:
- 8202- You should be enrolled in the course in which you have applied.
- 8518- Should maintain sufficient arrangements for education while in Australia.
- 8203-Should inform embassy; in case you change your education provider.
- 8501-Health insurance is compulsory.
- 8533-Should inform the education provider and the Department of Immigration and Border Protection about contact details and address within a week after arriving in Australia.
- 8303-Should abide by Australian laws and respect its culture and traditions.
- 8104- Student cannot work more than 40 hours per fortnight or 20 hours a week.
- 8105-Student cannot work before the class commences.
Student Visa Document Checklist:

- Complete Australian student visa application form (157A)
- Paid visa application fee which is AU$620
- Copy of passport biodata page
- Evidence of Financial funds
- Evidence of Overseas Health Insurance Cover (OSHC)
- Evidence of English language proficiency test result
- Evidence of criminal record check
- Previous records of Australian travel visa , if any
How to apply
Submit all the necessary educational documents, resume and statement of purpose (SOP) to the university. Currently, the institutes assess for GTE requirement and if they are satisfied, the applicant receives an unconditional offer letter and COE. After this, gather the necessary scanned documents that aresubmitted for visa process via ImmiAccount that is an online application system. Most visa applications usually takefour weeks to process.
